If you meet the English requirements for a visa, then the next step to getting a visa to live or work in Australia via the Skilled Program is to pass the Points Test.
Let’s explain WHY you need to pass the Points Test
There are three visas that require you to pass the Points Test:
- Skilled Independent (subclass 189)
- Skilled Nominated (subclass 190)
- Temporary Skilled (regional) (Subclass 489)
These visa are also known as General Skilled Migration program (work visas where you don’t need to be sponsored by an employer).
You can’t just apply for these visas.
You have to be INVITED by the Department of Home Affairs to apply for one of these visas.
That’s where the Points Test comes in. The DHA will only invite people with a Points Test score over 65… and quite often they will only invite if your score is 70+ because it’s very competitive.
How do you score points?
The test allocates points based on age, English language ability, education qualifications, Australian work experience, overseas work experience, and a number of other factors.
Calculating your points accurately is crucial!
You do not want to make an error with this calculation.
For you to receive an INVITATION to apply for one of these visas, you will need to complete an EXPRESSION OF INTEREST (EOI).
Your points must be accurate when you complete the EOI and you MUST have evidence to back up the points you claim to have.
For example, you if you state you have a Superior level of English (=20 points) then you must provide evidence such as an Official IELSTs Test Report showing you meet the English language ability scores to be considered ‘Superior’.
If you don’t have the evidence and claim the points, then when you get the visa application stage the visa could be refused.
Many people have unfortunately found themselves in this situation – their visa refused because they claimed to have more points than they did.
This is where using a Registered Migration Agent can make the visa process simple for you. We can accurately calculate your points and lodge an EOI for you so you have the best chance of getting an invitation to apply for a skilled visa.
